Game-ifying Diabetes Education

We created an educational class for people living with type 2 diabetes. Our goal was to make an otherwise boring conversation about healthy living and diabetes management into a memorable learning experience. So we created a series of games and activities to help participants understand and execute their learning objectives.

Your Body & Diabetes

Learn how food affects our bodies and what role glucose plays. Participants receive an organ card or an action card. As the teacher describes the digestive journey on the flip chart, participants enact their roles by passing and collecting the cards, imitating the body's function.

Full Plate

Learn to balance your plate. Every player receives 4 cards. Participants then pick up and discard cards until they get a "Full Plate" -- 2 non-starchy vegetables, 1 starch, and 1 protein. The fork designation on the back of the cards indicate the quality of your food choice. (3 forks indicates a better choice)

Spot The Carbs

Learn to find carbs in unexpected places. Participants identify sources of carbs from a spread of food. The teacher circles and discusses their answers.

Label vs. Label

Learn how to read a food label. Participants choose to compare two food labels and decide which is a better choice. The educator talks to certain points highlighted in the flip chart.

Who's Hungry

Make healthier food choices when dinning out. The group chooses one of four menus: Mexican, American, Chinese, or Italian. Everyone places an order, then the educator reviews the menu on the flip chart and discusses why some choices are better than others.

Take-A-Step

Every step counts. Match the activity cards to the intensity levels on the flip chart, you might be surprised what you find.
